While most Texas homeowners pay extra property taxes, there are several simple steps you can take to limit your tax bill. One option to reduce your property taxes is to protest the market value. Unequal appraisal appeals are valid when the assessment is below market value. Winning a property tax protest is easy.  Getting property owners to appeal is hard. Only 10% of Texan home owners appeal their property taxes.

Some property owners do not appeal due to a concern the appraisal district will want to inspect their house.  However, the appraisal district is MUCH too busy during the appeal season to even think about asking to inspect a property.  Assessors do not visit houses because of appeals. One reason it is difficult for appraisal districts to correctly value homes is they are not homogenous.  Some have been remodeled and some haven’t. Appraisal districts usually settle appeals at the informal hearing since it costs less and takes fewer resources. Protest your property taxes on market value and unequal appraisal by May 15th annually.  Protest even if you do not receive a value notice.
